Jack Gorrell is a highly motivated, enthusiastic and target driven individual. He is hard working, polite, punctual and confident. He is also a very friendly character who enjoys working as part of a team/ group as well as working on his own.
Jack is a self taught dancer all the way up until the age of 16, teaching himself the art of dance through watching videos on the television or on the internet and copying what he saw, which makes him unique and different from others. His first taste of a dance lesson was when he attended Cardinal Newman College in his home town of Preston and took up a course in Performing arts. After two years of learning the basics of Contemporary Dance, acting and singing, he knew that he wanted to pursue a career in Contemporary dance.
The main area which motivates Jack is that people have always said that he wouldn't make it as a dancer and that he was never good enough to pursue this dream of becoming a professional, so this and the support of his family have ensured that Jack will do all he can to become a professional dancer.
In September of 2012, Jack Started his journey of becoming a contemporary dancer when he was accepted onto a dance course at Liverpool John Moores University. Through his course he has been taught how to teach dance to many ages, being taken out to schools and colleges teaching dance from street and hip hop to contemporary dance. Also on the course he has been taught many areas in which contemporary dance reaches out to, from the classical form, to the eccentric and wild form that the dance style can take. Jack has performed in many shoes whilst attending the university, which is something he has never done before, building not only on his dancing vocabulary but also building his confidence to perform and showcase his abilities. After attending Liverpool John Moores, Jack has realised that his preferred method of practice is to get straight involved and use visualisations to help his brain calculate and imagine the type of movements that need to be completed.
Jack is currently working on his dissertation piece, which is to create a solo piece of choreography informed by a lived experience. Working towards this makes Jack feel as though he has a closer connection to the piece and a more emotional attachment to the creation to the piece. This ensures that Jack is passionate about creating the piece and this gives him an edge to his work as he has such an attachment to the piece that he is creating. Through this piece, Jack's biggest and hardest challenge about creating the piece is that he is so attached to the creation of the piece that the emotional level is too high and creating movement is made harder. Although this is an issue, Jack has ensured that he gives himself enough time that if there is an emotional block, he has enough time to carry on creating the piece.
After graduation, Jack intends to work hard on improving his technical ability and flexibility when moving and also improving upon his movement material by attending many classes that with broaden his movement knowledge.
Through having the ability to attend such a fantastic university, Jack is looking into moving forward with his dancing career, performing all over the world and eventually having the opportunity to teach what he has learned to those that are wanting to learn the art that is Contemporary Dance.
